LETTER TO EPHESIANS IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH
Ignatius, also called Theophorus, to that which is blessed with greatness in the fullness of God the Father predestined before the ages to be in any Time for a glory that does not steadfastly united and elected in genuine passion \u0026lt;of Christ, "by will of the Father and Jesus Christ our God - the Church worthy of being called blessed, which is at Ephesus in Asia, salvation in Jesus Christ and the joy beyond reproach.
I, 1. I received your name by God beloved, that you just acquired your nature, according to the faith and charity in Christ Jesus our Savior; "imitators of God" (cf. Paul, Eph 6, 1 ), revived in the blood of God (cf. Acts. 20, 28), you have the work completed to perfection to suit your nature. 2. You have learned that indeed I had chains on Syria Name and our common hope, hoping for happiness, thanks to your prayers, to fight against the beasts in Rome, so that, if I have the happiness to be a "genuine> disciple and you are eager \u0026lt;next> me. 3. It is therefore your whole community that I received in the name of God, Onesimus, \u0026lt;man> of unspeakable love, your bishop in the flesh. I want you to love in Jesus Christ, and all you would be like. Blessed be celula made you grace, you who were worthy to have such a bishop.
Il, 1. For Burrus, my fellow servant, your godly deacon, blessed in all things, I hope he still \u0026lt;about me> to honor you and to your bishop. About Crocus, worthy of God and you, I received a copy of your charity, it was a comfort to me in all things may the Father of Jesus Christ to comfort him also with Onesimus, and Burrus and Euplous and Fronto, in them is you all I've seen as charity. 2. May I enjoy you at all times, if I can be worthy. It is therefore in every way glorify Jesus Christ who has glorified you, that gathered in the same bid, subject to the bishop and priests, you are sanctified in all things.
III, 1. I do not give you orders as if I was somebody. Because if I am chained to the name, I'm not even done in Jesus Christ. Now I'm just starting to educate myself, and I address you as my classmates. It is I who would need to be anointed by you in faith, exhortation, patience, patience. 2. But since the charity does not allow me to say nothing about you, that's why I took the lead in urging you to walk in agreement with the thought of God. For Jesus Christ, our inseparable life, thought of the Father, as also bishops, drawn to the ends are in the mind of Jesus Christ.
IV, 1. It is therefore appropriate to proceed in accordance with the thought of your bishop, what else you do. Your priests precisely deemed worthy of God is granted to the bishop as the strings to a harp, so in the agreement your feelings and harmony of your love, you sing Jesus Christ. 2. Let each of you, you become a choir, so that, in the harmony of your agreement, taking the tone of God in unison you sing with one voice through Jesus Christ to the Father so that he listens to you and that you acknowledge, by your good works, such as members of His Son. It is therefore useful for you to be an inseparable unity, to participate in God always.
V, 1. If, in fact, I myself in so little time with your bishop contracted such intimacy, which is not human, but spiritual , how much more I commend you for it to be so deeply united, as the Church is Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ to the Father, so that all things are consistent in the unit. 2. That no one gets lost, if someone is not inside the sanctuary, he deprives himself "the bread of God" (Jn 6, 33). For if the prayer of two whole has such a force (cf. Mt 18, 20), how much more than the bishop and you the whole Church. 3. Whoever does not come at the joint meeting, this one is already the proud and he found himself, for it is written: "God resists the proud "(Proverbs 3, 34, cf. Jc 4, 6, 1 P 5, 5). Let us therefore careful not to resist the bishop, to be submitted to God. VI I. Lk 12, 42, Mt 24, 25), we must that we receive as the same one who sent him (cf. Mt 10, 40 Mk 1, 37, Lk 7, 48, Jn 13, 20). So it is clear that we must look to the bishop as the Lord himself. 2. Moreover, Onesimus himself praised highly up your good order in God that all you live by the truth, and no heresy remains at home, but you listen to someone talking about something other than Jesus Christ in truth.
VII, 1. Because men have the perverse trick used to wear around the name "God," but act otherwise and so unworthy of God; these, you should avoid them like wild beasts. They are mad dogs, who bite secretly. You must keep because their bites are difficult to heal. 2. There is only one doctor, carnal and spiritual, begotten and unbegotten, come in the flesh, God, true life in death, Mary and of God, first passible and impassible now, Jesus Christ our Lord.
VIII, 1. Let no one deceive you, as indeed you do not be fooled, being entirely to God. When no quarrel did you hit that can annoy you, then you really live according to God. I'm your scapegoat, and I offer myself in sacrifice for your church, Ephesians, which is renowned throughout the centuries. 2. The carnal can not do Spiritual works (cf. Rom 8, 5, 1 Cor 2, 14), nor the spiritual works of the flesh, as faith can not do the works of infidelity, infidelity or those of faith. And the very ones that you do in the flesh are spiritual, because it is in Jesus Christ that you do everything.
IX, 1. X, 1. "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5, 17) for other men. For there is hope of repentance in them, so they come to God. Let them therefore at least by your works to be your disciples. 2. In front of their anger, you, be gentle; their bragging, you be humble in their blasphemies, you your prayers for their mistakes, you be "steadfast in the faith" (Col. 1, 23); their savagery, you be quiet, without trying to imitate them. 3. Let us be their brethren with kindness and seek to be "imitators of the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 1, 6): - Which has been subjected to more injustice? who despoiled? which rejected? - So that no grass devil is among you, but that all purity and temperance, you remain in Jesus Christ, flesh and spirit.
XI, 1. This is the last time (cf. 1 Jn 2, 18); now ashamed and afraid that the forbearance of God does not turn to our condemnation. Or fear the wrath to come (cf. Mt 3, 7), or the like with this: one of two things. Only \u0026lt;if we are> found in Christ that we enter real life. 2. Outside it (cf. St. Paul, Phil 3, 9) that nothing has value for you, "in which I wear my chains, pearls spiritual, I would rise with them, thanks to your prayers, that I would like always found to be involved in the inheritance of Christians of Ephesus, who have always been united to the Apostles, by the power of Jesus Christ.

XIV, 1. XV, 1. Better to remain silent and to speak without that. It is good to teach, if the speaker is acting. So there is only one master (cf. Mt 23, 8), who "has said and everything was done" (Ps 32, 9, 148, 5) and the things he did in silence are worthy of his Father. 2. He who possesses in truth the word of Jesus can hear even its silence, to be perfect, to act on his word and you become known by his silence. Nothing is hidden in the Lord, but our very secrets are almost 1ui. 3. So do any worse in the thought> he lives in us so that we are temples (cf. 1 Cor 3, 16, 6, 19), and he is our God in us (cf. Rev 21 , 3), it is indeed, and it will appear in front of our face if we just love it.
XVI, 1. "Make no mistake about it," my brothers, those who will corrupt families shall not inherit the kingdom of God "(1 Cor 6 9.10) 2.. If they did that then were put to death, how much more one who corrupts by its bad faith doctrine God, why Jesus Christ was crucified? "He who has thus defiled go to unquenchable fire and even those who listen.
XVII, 1. If the Lord has received an anointing on the head, is to exhale a perfume for his Church of incorruptibility. Do not anoint the bad smell of the prince of this world (cf. Jn 12, 31, 14, 30), that it does not bring you into captivity from the life that awaits you. 2. Why do not we all become wise, on receiving the knowledge of God, which is Jesus Christ? Why perish foolishly ignoring the gift the Lord has truly sent?
XVIII, 1. My mind is the victim of the cross is a stumbling block to unbelievers, but to us salvation and eternal life (cf. 1 Corinthians 1, 23, 25): "Where is the wise? Where contentious?" (1 Cor 1 , 20) where the vanity of so-called scholars? 2. For our God, Jesus Christ, was carried in Mary's womb, according to the economy divine "the seed of David" (John 7.42, Romans 1.3, 2 Tim 2:8) and Holy Spirit. So how were they manifested for centuries? A star shone in heaven more than all the stars, and its light was inexpressible astonishment and novelty, and all the other stars with the sun and moon formed a chorus around the star and it threw its light more than any other. 2. And they were troubled, wondering where was this newness so different from themselves. 3. So all magic was destroyed, and any link abolished malice, ignorance was dispelled, and the old ruined kingdom, when God appeared in human form, "for a new life" eternal (Rom 6: 4); what had been decided by God began to be realized. So everything was confused, because the destruction of death was coming.
XX, 1. If Jesus Christ makes me worthy through your prayers, and if it will \u0026lt;God, "I'll explain in the second book that I write to you the economy that I started \u0026lt;talk to you," on the new man, Jesus Christ. It is faith in him and love for him in his resurrection souffrancceet ... 2. Pray for the Church in Syria, where I am led to Rome in chains, as being the last of the faithful there, I was deemed worthy to serve God's honor. Fare ye well in God the Father and Jesus Christ, our common hope.
to Diognetus
I. I see, Excellent Diognetus, the zeal that pushes you to instruct you on the Christian religion, the clarity and precision of the questions you ask about them: how God speaks to their faith? What do they worship him? Where does their contempt of the world and their unanimous contempt for death? Why do they make any of the gods recognized by the Greek and they not observe the Jewish superstitions? What is the great love they have for each other? And why these people again - this new way of life - is it came into existence these days and not earlier?
2. I congratulate you on this hard and I pray God, from whom comes the gift and speak and hear, he gives me the language most likely to make you better, you who hear me, and that it gives you to listen to me so do not be a cause of sadness for me that speaks to you.
II. So when you have purified your mind all the prejudices that beset it, when you'll be stripped of deceptive practices, when you become a new man like him who is born - because it is a new language, you admit yourself, you are about to hear - considering not only with eyes but through reason, what is the substance or form of those whom you call gods and acknowledge.
2. One is it not a stone similar to that tramples? Another bronze, nothing more valuable than melted utensils for our use? This other timber, and already rotting or money - It needs a man on his guard for fear of thieves - or iron corroded by rust, or clay, nothing more than a primer that is used for the vilest purposes? 3. All they are not made of corruptible matter? Figured by iron and fire? Is not that a sculptor who made it? A smelter that? A goldsmith? A potter? 4. Conversely, these gods that you worship at this time could they not be processed by the hands of men like other utensils? Are not they all deaf, blind, lifeless, unresponsive, unable to move? That's why you hate Christians: because they do not consider them as gods.
7. Yet you who believe and feel like, do not despise you much more than do the Christians? Much more than they mock you, the outrage the idols of stone or clay, you love them without guards, those of silver and gold, you keep them locked up during the night and day, you post guards next to them, lest they steal them!
8. And honors that you believe they are making rather an inconvenience to these gods, they are sentient, they feel nothing, you do so well see through blood and fat steaming your sacrifices!
9. That you would endure, that he makes that tolerates such honors? There will be nobody to bear willingly such inconvenience, because man is endowed with sense and reason. The stone, she supports it because it feels nothing: you see so much she is insensitive.
10. The refusal of Christians to worship such gods, I would have much to say, but if the above does not seem enough, I find it unnecessary to say more.
III. I come to what distinguishes the Christian worship of the Jews: it is, I think what you want most to learn.
2. When Jews refrain from idolatry which I just mentioned, they certainly have good reason to believe in one God and worship him as a master of the universe. But when following the example of the heathen that I just mentioned, they make him the same kind of worship, they are wrong. 3. 4. For "he who created heaven and earth and all things therein," which gives us free to all what we need, can not itself be in need of such goods that attaches itself to those who imagine them to give him. 5. Certainly, those who think him a cult by blood, fat and smoking and burnt by honoring these ceremonies appear to me in any way differ from those that deploy the same liberality with respect to idols deaf who can not take part in these awards. Is it not rather the stupidity?
6. It is therefore with reason that Christians abstain from light and the general error "indiscreet as ritualism and the pride of the Jews. I suppose thee have learned enough about it. But what their own religion is a mystery: hope not can never learn from a man.
V. For the Christians are distinguished from other men neither by country or language, or customs. 2. They inhabit no cities of their own, they do not use any special dialect, their way of life has nothing singular. 3. This is not the imagination or dreams of restless spirits as their doctrine owes its discovery, they do do not, like many others, the champions of human doctrine. 4. They are divided into the Greek and barbarian cities along the portion allotted to each, and they conform to local customs for clothing, food and way of life, while demonstrating the extraordinary and truly paradoxical laws of their spiritual republic. 5. They live in their own homeland, but as resident aliens. They perform all their duties as citizens and endure all things as foreigners. Every foreign land is their homeland and every homeland a foreign land. 6. They marry like everyone else, they have children, but they give up not their newborns. 7. They all share the same table, but not their bed. 8. They are in the flesh, but do not live in the flesh. 9. They spend their life on earth, but are citizens of heaven. 10. They obey the established laws and their way of life surpasses the laws in perfection.
11. They love all men and all the persecutors. 12. They were unaware, they are condemned, they kill them and thus they gain life. 13. They are poor and enrich the many. They lack everything and they abound in all things. 14. They despise and contempt they find their glory. They slander and they are justified. 15. They insult and they bless. They are insulting and they honor. 16. Doing only good, they are punished as criminals. Punished, they are in joy as if they sprang to life. 17. Jews make war against them as to foreigners and are persecuted by the Greeks and those who hate can not say the cause of their hatred.
VI. In a nutshell, what the soul is in the body, Christians are in the world. 2. The soul is spread throughout the members of the body as Christians in the cities of the world. 3. The soul dwells in the body and yet it is not the body, like the Christians live in the world but not of the world. 4. Invisible, the soul is trapped in a body visible and Christians, it is clear they are in the world, but their worship to God is invisible. 5. The flesh hates the soul and makes war without receiving any harm, because it prevents him from enjoying the pleasures of even the world hates Christians who do him no harm, because they s preclude its pleasures. 6. The soul loves the flesh that hates it, and its members as Christians love those who hate. 7. The soul is trapped in the body : But is it that keeps the body, Christians are like prison in the world yet they are the ones that hold the world. 8. Immortal soul lives in a tent mortal Christians and camped in the corruptible, while awaiting the celestial incorruptibility. 9. The soul gets better by mortifying by hunger and thirst: persecuted Christians every day are increasing more and more. 10. So noble is the position God has assigned them, that they are not allowed to desert.
VII. As I said above, their tradition does not have an earthly origin, what they profess to keep with such care is not the invention of a mortal, nor what their faith is given to a dispensation of human mysteries. 2. But in truth the Almighty himself, the Creator of all things, invisible, God himself sending down from heaven, has established among men of Truth, the holy and incomprehensible Word has confirmed in their hearts. Not, as some might imagine, he sent a subordinate to men, angel or archon, one of the minds in charge of land affairs, or those who are entrusted with the government of heaven, but the Craftsman and The organizer of the universe: it is through him that God created the heavens, for He has locked himself in the sea its limits: it is where all the cosmic elements faithfully observe the laws mysterious; him that the sun has been the rule that must be observed in shopping Daily, he who obeys the moon, shining in the night, to him who obey the stars accompanying the moon in its course from him all things were available, boundaries and hierarchy: the heavens and all that is in the heavens and the earth and everything on earth, the sea and everything in the sea, fire, air, the abyss, the world above, one below the intermediate regions : It is he whom God sent to men.

He sent for us to call him, not to accuse us: he sent it because he loved us, not to judge us. 6. 7. Do not you see Christians thrown to the beasts to make them deny the Lord and they do not let themselves be overcome? 8. Do not you see the more you martyrs, most Christians are increasing elsewhere? 9. VIII. For was there ever, among men, someone who has known what God was before he came himself ? 2. Unless you accept the vanities and follies of those talkers philosophers! Some have taught that God was on fire - they call the fire god to whom they are intended - for others it is water or some other material created by God. 3. However, if either of these doctrines was in order, each of the other creatures could be just as God proclaimed. 4. But all this is fable and fiction of these charlatans. 5. None of the men had seen or known: it is he who has revealed himself. 6. And it manifested itself in the faith which alone has been privileged to see God.
7. For the Master and Creator of the Universe, God, who made all things and placed them in order, was shown to men not only loving but also patience. 8. He has always been as it is and will be: helpful, kind, gentle, truthful, and he alone is good. 9. But, having conceived a design of a magnitude ineffable, he did release his only child. 10. As he maintained the mystery and reserved his wise plan, it seemed we ignore and do not worry about us. 11. But when it was unveiled by his beloved child and indicated that he had prepared from the outset, it offered us at once: and to participate in its benefits, and to see and understand, which of us ever expected it would?
IX. So God had already arranged everything himself with his child, but until recently, he suffered that we allow ourselves to take our will by flailing, seduced by the pleasures and passions, not because that He felt a perverse pleasure to see us sin, only tolerated it, not that he approved of, this reign of lawlessness. Rather, he prepared the present reign of justice, so that, having proved, in this first phase, our own works made us unworthy of life, now we might become worthy by virtue of the divine goodness, and that we are unable to access shown by us same to the kingdom of God, God's power we make now can.

XI. I do not say anything strange, I do not search the paradox, but docile to the lessons of the Apostles, I am the doctor of Nations. I convey exactly the tradition to those who are disciples of Truth. 2. Who, indeed, properly instructed and led by the kindness of the Word, not quick to learn fully all that the Word is clearly taught his disciples. The Word, manifesting, theirs expressed, outspoken, misunderstood by infidels, attributable to his disciples who recognized him as his followers received the knowledge of the mysteries of the Father. 3. That is why the Word was sent: for it is manifest in the world, he who, despised by his people, has been preached by the apostles and believed by the nations. 4.
